School Council

At Springfield School we encourage full participation of our children in the life of their school and do our best to ensure that their voice is heard clearly. The School Council has been set up in order to develop ways for our children to understand and consider issues affecting them, and to express their views on them.

Students from Year 2 to Year 6 are elected by their class to represent the views of each year group. This ‘Student Voice’ gives our children a means by which they can discuss and share opinions, contribute ideas and be consulted on decisions, problem solving and other matters related to their learning and the running of their school. School Council meetings are held fortnightly.

Miss Carroll (Deputy Head Teacher) chairs the meetings and draws up an agenda for each meeting based on class discussion and students’ needs:

A typical agenda:
1. Welcome and introduction by Chair
2. Minutes/feedback on action points from previous meeting. This should include feedback from the senior leadership team.
3. New items for this meeting
4. Close and date of next meeting

Feedback and communication:
1. Minutes of School Council meeting distributed to members, Head Teacher and all staff.
2. A brief summary of the minutes are sent to class teachers and council members to be fed back to all students by the class the representatives.
3. Class teachers or representatives feed back suggestions for future agenda items from their class to Miss Carroll.
4. Minutes are sent to the Head Teacher for discussion/action.
